Dear Friends in Christ,
November is a special month dedicated to Black Catholic History. This month we are particularly praying for the canonization of the “saintly six”. These are six holy and heroic black Catholics whose cause is open for sainthood. It is a tragedy that we do not have any African-American saints yet. We have American saints and saints from every race and corner of the world, yet no African-American saints. This is especially important for the Catholic Church in America because all of these “saintly six” have experienced the injustice of racism in our country and sadly in our Church.
Every weekend of November we have special slide shows before Mass and two of these six candidates for Sainthood will be highlighted. We will also have prayer cards for these Servants of God available after Masses this month. I want to thank the Racial Justice Circle members for helping with organizing this push to get to know and pray for the canonization of these holy women and men.
I got a few questions about the process of canonization, and it has launched a new video series that will debut this week with our Katharine Konnection. We are calling it, “Questions of Faith” and we hope it will become a weekly short vlog answering questions you might have about the faith. I’m looking forward to doing them and using technology to help us all to answer questions we may have about our faith. God bless you!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Matt
