Dear Friends in Christ,
I got so carried away with a Thanksgiving message that it became a bulletin insert. So here is a little reflection on the Feast Day of Christ the King of the Universe.
First, I think this is one of my favorite titles for a Feast Day. Jesus is truly the King of everything that exists. The universe is more vast than we can really comprehend, yet Jesus Christ is over and above it all. God is the creator and the giver of life, as well as the hope for redemption, salvation, and eternal life. The power of God is not only greater than all worldly power, but God’s majesty even dwarfs the largest stars and black holes.
Secondly, proclaiming Christ the King is not just a private act, but a public one. This feast day was established in 1925. During the early part of the twentieth century there were a growing number of places in our world where regimes were threatening not only the Catholic Church but any religious faith. This Feast Day was about religious freedom and to boldly proclaim that no worldly power was above the rule of God. Now a days there might not be blatant threats against faith in the public square, but there seems to be a lot of pressure to not be too open about our faith.
While we don’t want to be aggressive or weird about it, we do want to make clear that we love Jesus and He is our true King and King of the Universe!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Matt
