Quest for L'Arche
Staff Contact: Ana Maria Alvarado, Pastoral Associate
Saint Katharine Drexel is hosting L’Arche – a community of persons with & without disabilities one Friday night a month for social events. Each event is sponsored by Quest for L’Arche in Maryland whose purpose is to spread the L’Arche vision, meet people in the Frederick community, and to provide information about their ultimate goal which is to build & maintain a local L’Arche home for adults with developmental disabilities and their friends. The monthly social events held at Saint Katharine Drexel are interfaith, multi-cultural, and intergenerational. All are welcome to participate. Saint Katharine Drexel High School Youth serve a special role at each event providing logistical support and building personal relationships with their developmentally disabled friends in attendance.
L’Arche, French for “The Ark,” was founded in 1964 by Jean Vanier, a Canadian Catholic layman. L’Arche communities bear witness to the reality that persons with intellectual disabilities possess inherent qualities of welcome, wonderment, spirituality, and friendship. They make explicit the dignity of every human being by building inclusive communities of faith and friendship where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together.
